23rd February 2010 - IN FLOW AGAINST THE FLOW

IN FLOW AGAINST THE FLOW

Driving to Soweto with Sipho, one of my facilitators, early one morning, on our way to attend a Christmas party for a primary school we had done a leadership camp for, we were expressing gratitude that we were not stuck in the traffic going in the opposite direction.

It made me think about how often I am in flow most when I am actually going against the flow!

It’s when I follow my heart, listen to my intuition, speak my truth and do what I feel is right, that things start to flow for me and to me ... and I end up having the most fun!! It is also very often when I am doing exactly the opposite of what the crowd is doing, or what society expects - Doing things differently to what the "rules of control" say.

Being in the flow also happens when I am living in the now! I experienced the flow of living in the now often in Uganda recently. Living within the simplicity of rural living, yet within the boundaries of my volunteer duties, there was not much need to plan ahead, or to live up to anyone else's expectations. I was able to get up each day and really feel what I'd like to do with the day, where I'd go and what I'd do.

The results were astonishing! I was so supported. For example, when it came time for me to leave, I had to take a bus from Kabale to Kampala - renowned for delays, the trip could take up to 12 hours. I set off at dawn with my backpack and arrived at the bus terminal. The young man I found who spoke English said the bus had already left from there. But not to worry ... he placed a call on his cell phone and told me to follow him up to the main road. Next thing, a bakkie came and picked us up and took as to a bus stop just out of town where the bus was collecting passengers. I boarded seconds before the bus departed ... We arrived in Kampala a short and effortless 7 hours later!

As the bus made its way through the crowded streets and mayhem of Kampala, I was trustingly wondering how I would ever find my hotel. Next thing, a man arrived on the bus, "Muzungu! (What white folk or foreigners are called.) You want a taxi?" Of course I did! Once we arrived at the terminus, he escorted me off the bus, to his cab and delivered me safely on the doorstep of my hotel!

And my whole trip was like this!

I believe our lives can be like this when we are in flow, follow our hearts and live every moment in the moment!
